This class was developed to give attendees an overview of the predictive policing process that incorporates traditional and non-traditional data analysis to forecast crime trends. A unique process of identifying areas with a higher probability of experiencing a criminal act, this process was recognized and published by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Cap Index, which is a company that provides forecast data to fortune 500 companies around the world in an effort to identify safe areas for businesss to build. Research by the instructor and others was designed to yield a predictive formula using density analysis attributed to community movement and Calls for Service (CFS) as potential “gateway” crime indicators.
The SHIELD presentation covers a new concept of community policing and intelligence sharing in an effort to support counterterrorism and crime prevention efforts. Historically, the largest community partnership initiatives revolved around Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch and similar programs. The SHIELD initiative not only connects with these groups, but connects with all citizens with an intentional focus of keeping ahead of those crimes that transcend jurisdictional boundaries and the emerging threat of terrorism. Outside of the community partnerships that officers garner every day, SHIELD offers a formal mechanism to ensure long lasting and informative partnerships.
