Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) is deeply rooted in the professional design field. We believe that most architects are creative visionaries who already possess much of the knowledge needed to understand and apply CPTED, but may not understand how the application in their designs can improve safety and how to do so without quelling creativity. We have designed this course with the busy architect in mind. We trimmed away the many aspects that are often taught to others in a CPTED certification course as not needed for the currently practicing architect. Recognizing that architects rarely have time to attend a one or two full week course, this course will build upon their existing knowledge and necessary creativity in order to prepare the design professional with a fuller understanding of CPTED, in a time frame acceptable to a busy profession.
The instructor for this course has collaborated with design professionals in reviewing and giving input relevant to designs of public safety structures, schools, public housing and greenway trails. He is the author of Virginia’s statutorily mandated CPTED review checklist for public schools and an is a recognized expert in crime prevention through environmental design with many years of providing instruction in this topic.
