Have you ever considered that homes, businesses and communities may be inviting the criminal into their neighborhood? Did you realize that there are neighborhoods that have seen a drastic reduction in certain types of crime and have been able to reallocate patrols elsewhere simply by changing the environment? Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) has been successful around the world in impacting crime, yet it is still relatively misunderstood.

This training is intended to introduce attendees to the concept and principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, Target hardening and Situational Crime Prevention, as they complement one another. This introductory class is specifically designed for those with little knowledge of the research leading to the principles and application of CPTED. This course also delves into the relationship of CPTED to other modern crime prevention philosophies and practices.

The course will provide the student with a foundational understanding of the importance that the environment plays in potential to generate crime, as well as how efficiently crime can be prevented through properly addressing the environment. The instructor’s logical common sense approach to CPTED will provide even the novice with the skills to read the built environment, apply considerations learned, and make recommendations to lessen the conditions most favorable for crime to flourish.

Students will be introduced to the proactive application of the principles of CPTED by an instructor with practical experience and success in impacting crime in multiple environments through their use. Using photographs, exercises, lecture and video the students will leave prepared to examine homes and structures for crime vulnerabilities.

Specific Topics Include:

• Modern research and the science leading to CPTED.

• Relationship of design to social behavior.

• CPTED principles and application.

• The connection to crime opportunity reduction strategies.

Who should Attend?

This course is designed for any law enforcement agency staff tasked with, or who will be tasked with, conducting vulnerability security assessments on homes, businesses or non-regulated facilities or those seeking the credential of a Certified Law Enforcement CPTED Practitioner.
